abstract = "The process of expansion of economic activities with a view to
exploration of natural resources has always caused impacts to the
society where these resources are explored. The recent expansion
of the coal extraction activity in the sub-district of Moatize,
has led to changes in land use which are the result not only of
the operating process of the mineral resource extraction, such as
the actions of the state itself to mitigate the consequences of
these exploration at the society and the environment itself. The
geotechnology has been an important tool in urban and regional
planning in order to optimize time spent on the analysis of land
use changes in order to provide a rapid response to the impacts
that the expansion of economic activities bring to the social and
natural environment. In this sense, this article presents a
methodological approach for mapping land use and land cover
changes using satellite images with the support of remote sensing
and digital image processing SPRING 5.4.2 and ArcGIS 10.3.1. This
methodological procedure resulted in land use and cover maps of
the sub-district of Moatize from 2006 to 2015, which allowed
analysing the results provided by the temporal mapping, assess the
changes taking place and their environmental effects.",
